6 April 2011 Dinner News – Canada’s History of Meltdown

Chalk River, Ontario, Canada

Sleepy town was the site of a disaster in the 50's.

With all the talk of the ongoing disaster in Japan I found an interesting article on today that brought the debate much closer to home.  In the 50’s there was a melt down at the nuclear laboratory on the Chalk River in Ontario Canada.  Even this past week there have been small earthquakes in the area that have continued the debate of what is safe and what is risky at this remote location where pharmaceutical and research nuclear material is still made today.

Take a minute to walk through the pictures and read some of the history of this wonderfully rich region of maple and pike even if the curling barn is too far away to visit in person.

The Meal

Canadian Burger With Beer-Braised Onions and Cheddar

Baked Northern Pike – Fishing trips on the Chalk river boast of Northern Pike, Bass and Pan Fish and this simple green pepper and bacon treatment would be perfect after a day on the river.

Atomic Canuck Chili – I was not able to find any recipes from the annual Lion’s Club Winter Festival Chili Contest online… but in honor of the yearly event… here is another Canadian chili.

Side Dish

Three Sisters Soup – Corn, bean and squash soup passed down through various Indian cultures throughout Canada.

Maple Cornbread – from the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers website.

Butter Tart – Like a pecan pie, but with raisins and walnuts.
